School Residencies
The Madison Jazz Society partners with the Madison Metropolitan School District to enhance jazz education programs in Madison public schools through its School Residency Program. As a part of these programs, jazz teaching artists, in conjunction with the on-site teacher, work with music students in the school, often developing a jazz culminating performance. Examples of residencies in the 2018-19 school year include:
- Residency with Laurie Lang at Gompers Elementary School. For the final performance, the Dixie Doodlers jazz group performed with all of the students.
- The Jefferson Middle School Residency culminated with Laurie Lang, Mary Gaines, Chris Wagoner and other guest strings’ musicians performing with the string orchestra students.
- At Toki Middle School, Joey Banks and his quartet met with seventh and eighth grade band students culminating with a group performance for the entire school.
