Atom String Quartet is one of the most intriguing string quartets in the world, and also one of best Polish jazz bands. The group combines the capabilities of a string quartet (i.e. two violins, viola and cello) with improvisation in its broad sense. The set of instruments of a chamber music ensemble, which is most classic and firmly established in music tradition, enables the artists to search for new sound and formal achievements. It is difficult to define, in an explicit way, the music style of the group. Its music output, besides jazz, shows sources of inspiration coming from Polish folk, music of various regions of the world, and also contemporary and classical music. It will be a night of original music as well as fresh arrangements of standard repertoire (including some off-the-beaten-path gems), all delivered in this trio’s bold but tasty manner, at once creative, swingin’, and subtle! Paul Silbergleit is a Milwaukee-based jazz guitarist, composer, educator, and author. Straight-ahead in style, he bears the influence of figures such as Grant Green, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Pat Martino, and Kenny Burrell.
By age 28, trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has proven to be that rarest of talents: not only a fiery trumpet player with a stirring command of the postbop trumpet vernacular in the vein of Kenny Dorham and Freddie Hubbard, but also a singer with a sly, mature, naturally expressive delivery in the post-Sinatra mold, performing standards and his own astute songs with a thrilling sense of showmanship. His superb intonation and bracing virtuosity enable him to handle astounding feats of originally composed vocalese (complex solos with written lyrics). On top of it all, he’s a highly capable pianist as well.
Mateusz Smoczyński leads his own quintet, featuring some of Poland’s most celebrated jazz musicians, including pianist Jan Smoczyński, guitarist Konrad Zemler, double-bassist Wojciech Pulcyn with Michał Miśkiewicz on drums. The quintet has released three records: Inspirations, Expressions and Berek, with the latter being nominated for the 2017 Fryderyk phonographic award as the Best Jazz Album of the Year. www.smoczynski.pl This concert is co-organized by Mad-PolKA Productions and sponsored by Polish Heritage Club of Madison https://www.phcwi-madison.org/
New Record: Post Rock Lately August 2019- Digital only release through Bandcamp. Album artwork by Gillian Olivas-Etherington. Post Rock Lately is the debut record from pan-Midwest trio. Collector. Composed of Jakob Heinemann on bass (Chicago), Devin Drobka on drums (Milwaukee), and Matt Blair on Fender Rhodes and electronics (Minneapolis), this working trio of improvisors has played together in countless contexts stretching back to 2012. For their first recording, they exhibit an utterly unique approach to free improvisation through two expansive pieces, recorded live in April 2018 at the Slate Arts venue in Chicago. Taking as much influence from drone and noise music as from classic free jazz, the trio moves through a series of rich, evocative sonic landscapes, at times reaching moments of dense freneticism paralleled only by inverse textures of extreme sparsity and silence. Above all, Collector prizes close listening and a sensibility for self-expression in their music.
