Sun Prairie High School Jazz Band 1 Send-Off Concert
May 7, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$10
Sun Prairie High School’s Jazz I band has been selected to perform and compete in the twenty-second annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band and Festival in New York City. Based on a blind audition in January comprised of approximately 100 bands from around the country, Sun Prairie Jazz 1 was selected as one of only fifteen finalists. This year is Sun Prairie High School’s fifth consecutive year as a finalist in the festival and competition, and their eleventh year attending.
Jazz 1 has had several concerts and special practices and clinics with renowned jazz performers in preparation for this year’s festival and competition. The band has also been doing many fund raising events, as they have to raise approximately $35,000 to pay for their trip. Their largest fundraiser is a raffle. Tickets for the raffle may be purchased from band members for $5 a ticket or 5 tickets for $20. Donations are also accepted online at spbb.org.
Jazz 1 will be performing a final send-off concert on Sunday, May 7, at Sun Prairie High School Performing Arts Center, 888 Grove St, Sun Prairie. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Raffle tickets will be available for sale until the concert begins. During intermission there will be an auction for an airplane ride with pilot Bruce Fischer (a former Jazz I parent). The second half of the concert will include the raffle drawings for 40 great prizes.
The band will travel to New York on May 10 and return May 14. The festival is held at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s home, Frederick P. Rose Hall, on May 11–13 at the Time Warner building in Rose Hall at the edge of Central Park in Manhattan.
