The Art of the Rag
June 26 @ 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society (BDDS) presents its 31st summer chamber music festival, live and in person, RICHES TO RAGS, June 10 – 26, 2022. This festival features eight concerts over three weekends, each weekend offers two different programs.
Concerts are spiked with stories about the music, mystery guests, and even door prizes. Artistic directors and performers Stephanie Jutt, flute, and Jeffrey Sykes, piano, are joined by 26 musicians from Madison and around the country.
In the third week, BDDS is doing a deep dive into ragtime, a quintessentially American musical style that originated in Black communities in the late 19th century. They’ve invited the New England Ragtime Ensemble (NERE), the leading ragtime orchestra in the world, to collaborate with them on two programs. The first, THE ART OF THE RAG, explores the origins of ragtime in the early works of Black composers Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Louis Chauvin, and traces its development to the modern day with composers Joseph Lamb, Jelly Roll Morton, and Eubie Blake. It also includes “classical” music influenced by ragtime, including music of Debussy and Gershwin’s spectacular Rhapsody in Blue. The second program, FROM RAGS TO JAZZ, traces the pathway from Joplin’s great rags to the earliest jazz such as Zez Confrey’s thrilling Kitten on the Keys and Dizzy Fingers. It also includes Gershwin’s beautiful Lullaby for string quartet, one of Gershwin’s earliest hits.
